Tensile and Fracture Properties of Silicon Carbide Whisker-Modified Cement-Based Materials

Abstract Silicon carbide whiskers (SiCw) have many excellent properties such as high strength, elastic modulus, and temperature resistance. In this paper, by using water reducer dispersant, a stable SiCw dispersion was obtained, SiCw-modified cement-based composites were prepared. Tensile strength tests for 8-shaped specimens carried out on the materials. The fracture of materials measured three-point bending test with pre-cracks based digital image correlation method. microstructure mortar observed SEM. results showed that improved tensile materials, addition effectively toughness mortar. caused crack deflection during propagation, accompanied whisker pull-out bridging phenomena. effect mechanism controlled propagation played toughening role, thus enhancing resistance
